More than 20,000 tonnes of frozen peas and beans pass through the facility each harvest – equating to 12 per cent of the UK’s total output.
The cold store is capable of operating 24 hours a day and, during harvest, takes in two or three lorry loads of stock every hour.
Supplies at Dundee Cold Stores Ltd are sourced from more than 300 farms in Tayside and Fife and subsequently distributed to many leading food companies, including Birdseye.
The whole pea-freezing process takes no more than 150 minutes from field to freezer. This ensures all the nutrients in the peas – otherwise lost at room temperature – are locked in.
The factory employs 25 full-time and 130 seasonal staff.
